The Presidents of Cuba and United States, Raul Castro and Barack Obama, respectively, talked today at the UN headquarters, where they attended high-level events.
The meeting, the second official one they held after that carried out in April in Panama, is part of the process of rapprochement announced by both leaders on December 17, that led two months ago to the restoration of diplomatic relations and the reopening of embassies.

Raul Castro and Obama exchanged greetings yesterday at the reception the U.S. president offered to the heads of State and Government participating in the debate of the General Assembly in its 70th session, scheduled from Sept. 28 to Oct. 3.

It is expected that the meeting behind closed doors the leaders discussed issues related to the process to normalize ties.

Speaking yesterday at the Assembly, the island’s statesman reiterated that speaking of normal ties, the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by Washington for more than 50 years should end, and the return of the territory illegally occupied by the U.S. Naval Base in Guantanamo, and the cessation of subversion against Cuba, including illegal radio and television broadcast, should materialize.

On the other hand, Obama admitted that the siege has no reason to be and insisted in its expectations that the U.S. Congress put an end to it.
