Scientific Community Joins World Against the Blockade

Members of the scientific community in the province of Camaguey expressed on Wednesday their adhesion to the world condemnation to the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the US against Cuba.

Wednesday’s support of 191 UN member nations with only two votes against, US and Israel showed the common sense and respect towards Cuba of the international community in face of imperialism’s arrogance and selfishness, said Oscar Parrado Alvarez.

Professor of the School of Agricultural and Animal Sciences of the University of Camaguey and with several decades of experience in research on genetic resources and professional formation, Parrado pointed out that the blockade has been an obstacle in the access of software and specialized
magazines.

Due to the genocide policy, there are valuable academic websites, which are totally blocked for Cubans, either in accessing information, and publishing materials said the researcher while celebrating the results of the UN General Assembly vote approving the Cuban Resolution demanding an end to the
blockade.

The representative of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment in  the province, Andrea Armas Rodriguez said that the sector has been one of the most damaged due to the blockade, but despite the hostile policy, they have been able to achieve important outcomes in Cuban science.

There has always been people of good will in the United States interested in strengthening exchanges with the Cuban scientific community, evidence that shows that the people in the US are not in favor or support Washington’s policy towards the island, she said.

New possibilities were opened with the establishment of diplomatic relations, said the scientist, as the science sector in the US have always appreciated Cuba’s advances in environmental policies, confronting climate change and biomedical research.

The representative to the Ministry said during the 1st Workshop on Climate Change that the new policy of the Donald Trump administration has generated uncertainty in the exchanges.

The blockade has extraterritorial impacts that makes it difficult to access funds for research, development and innovation from cooperation projects with other counties, said Maria Spencer Black, educator of the Cuban Association of Agricultural and Forestry Technicians.

The United States imposed the economic, commercial and financial blockade against Cuba in October of 1960, reinforcing the policy with the Torricelli Law and the Helms Burton in 1996.

The US and Israel abstained in last year’s UN vote on the Cuban Resolution “Necessity of Ending the Economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba” in correspondence with the executive power of former President Barack Obama.
