Youth from Granma Pay Tribute to Maceo and Che

A group of 300 students and workers from the eastern province of Granma will camp on Wednesday in the rural community of  Peralejo, some 17 kilometers from the city of Bayamo to celebrate the  birthdays of Antonio Maceo and Ernesto Che Guevara, two great figures of
Cuban history.

Organized by the Municipal Committee of the Young Communist League (UJC) in Bayamo, the initiative will gather students from the University of Granma, the branch of the Efrain Benitez Popa School of Medicine and youth linked to several work sectors.

The new generation will commemorate the 173rd anniversary of the leader of the Protesta de Baragua and the 90th of the Heroic Guerrilla in the city of Bayamo where, on July 13th, 1895 Antonio Maceo headed the most important military actions of the Necessary War.

The First Secretary of the UJC in the territory, Yordanis Charchaval told ACN that the tribute will include visits to other historic sites, among them hiking to the General Headquarters of the Rebel Army in La Plata and Turquino Peak, the highest elevation on the island.

The Jose Marti Pioneer Children’s Organization in Granma will carry out, like the rest of the country, an activity on Thursday in which 3rd grade students will receive the red scarf as members of the institution.

She added that new members of the UJC will receive their membership cards, hold different activities among them with personalities and combatants to learn about the life and work of independence leader Antonio Maceo and Legendary Guerrilla Ernesto Che Guevara.

The Provincial assembly of the 3rd Congress of the Hermanos Saiz Association will be another event that will celebrate the date.
